Cameron Highlands

"This is Malaysia's green bowl supplying vegetables to the major cities of the country and also to Singapore."

Tucked away serenely amidst the clouds 1,829 metres above sea level is Cameron Highlands, Pahang state's premier hilltop holiday spot. The cool, fresh air in the highlands offers makes for an attractive retreat for city dwellers who want to get away temporarily from the noise and pollution in the city.

The cool climate is also an ideal condition for the cultivation of tea. Tea cultivated on Cameron Highlands is among the best tea found in the country. Verdant green hillsides planted with young tea plant covers your vision as you drive slowly up the meandering road to the three townships of Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang.

First discovered in 1885 by a British surveyor William Cameron, the fame of Cameron Highlands grew during the colonial era when British Planters realised the potential of its fertile mountain slopes for growing tea, then a prized commodity among the colonies.

Families of these Britishers stationed in Malaya at the time also took to the hills in seeking respite from the hot, humid tin mines and rubber plantations. Some of the bungalows left behind are still preserved for viewing by tourist, with a few facilities added for the conveniences of visitors.

Since then, Cameron Highlands, with its cool temperate surroundings has developed into a favoured getaway among honeymooning couples as the beauty and tranquility of this captivating plateau has cast its spell of enchantment over locals and visitors alike.

Blue skies, clear streams and profusion of colourful flowers add to the splendour of this magnificent holiday site. Bird-watching is also a treat that many indulge in at Cameron Highlands. Truely, a visit to Pahang would not be complete without a trip up to Cameron Highlands.

Getting There

The gateway to Cameron Highlands is Tapah, which is easily reached by bus, taxi or train from Kuala Lumpur. From Tapah, you can take a bus or taxi to Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands' main town.

User Recommendation

"The trip up to CH was a horror, the bus didn't have air-cond (even though we were charged for the air-cond coach!!!) and F1 wannabe drivers!!! However, once you survive the trip there, the air is nice and cool. Do try the adventure tours offered by the agents in CH, it was a nice experience. Don't eat too much if you're taking the bus back as it might all come out!!! Ah, and be prepared to wait for at least an hour or more ... they operate on M'sian hours ... ie. LATE! The tourism board should really take some action against the bus company that monopolises the bus service to CH, they are the worst I've used in Peninsular M'sia."
