In 1988, Pulau Singa Besar (Big Lion Island) was gazetted as a forest reserve and a permanent bird and animal sanctuary. Many of the species of flora and fauna on the island are as they were when first discovered centuries ago. There are observation posts throughout the island for the convenienve of visitors who wish to view the wildlife from a distance. You will be amazed at the pristine tropical forest and its inhabitants.
Among others, facilities available here include jungle treks, lookout points, rest areas and campsites. Permit to visit the island must be obtained from the Fisheries Department. For more information, please contact the Langkawi Tourist Information Centre at 604-9667789.

By Road
From the North South Expressway (NSE), head north to Kedah and take the Alor Setar Selatan exit (Interchange 177) onto the highway headed to Teluk Kechai and on to Kuala Kedah where you can catch a ferry to Langkawi island. Alternatively, you can also catch ferries from Kuala Perlis further north, accessible via the Jitra Selatan exit (Interchange 181) via Kodiang and Kangar on trunk road K3. This route is longer, at 48km from the NSE exit.
Pulau Singa Besar is wedged between Pulau Dayang Bunting and Pulau Beras Basah. It is 16 kilometres from Kuah town and is accessible by a 45-minute boat ride from Kuah Jetty. |
