Trekking

One of the ways to experience Malaysia’s rainforests is to walk along the jungle trails on foot. It is truly a refreshing and rewarding experience to be able to trek the diversely tropical and deeply forested rolling hills, gushing rivers, steep forested slopes and muddy trails.

The lowlands are covered primarily by dipterocarp forest, one of nature’s most complex and diverse eco-systems. In this rainforest, many animals reside here; including the Sumatran rhinoceros, clouded leopard and orang utan. Even the plants are equally fascinating, carnivorous pitcher plants and the world's largest flower, a parasitic vine that lives on the forest floor.

At an elevation of about 900m, the lowland forest changes to montane forest while dipterocarp trees give way to oak and chestnut. If one goes higher, mossy forest gives way to forest with gnarled and stunted trees.

To walk through the rainforest, you do not need to organise a major expedition. Montane forest can be easily accessible at hill resorts like Fraser's Hill and Cameron Highlands. Montane forests are cooler and more comfortable for trekking compared to the hot, humid lowland rainforests, but are equally fascinating. The well-marked trails, some of which go up nearby mountains, provide a safe introduction to jungle terrain.
