Kuching, May 9 – Infrastructure Development and Communication Assistant Minister, Lee Kim Shin today said, the WiFi services in Kuching, Sibu and Miri are currently being expanded while Bintulu can expect similar services in the next two months.

There is a local company called Danawa Resources Sdn Bhd that had so far built nine out of 70 planned WiFi base stations in Kuching, serving some 32 business and housing areas and academic institutions in the city. In Sibu, a total of 25 base stations have been planned with seven installed whereas in Miri, 40 out of 50 stations have been built.

Besides that, there are approximately 24 business and housing areas and academic institutions covered with WiFi services in Sibu.

Lee also said that the WiFi services were expected to commence in Bintulu in May or June involving the installation of 25 base stations.

In addition, he said Danawa Resources had set up a main core data centre in Kuching and regional data centres in Sibu and Miri to cater to the rapid expansion of WiFi services in these areas. At the same time, Danawa Resources is implementing its wireless broadband services in rural areas in its effort to bridge the digital divide in Sarawak.
