Miri, 9 May 2008 - Strong winds and shower ushered in the afternoon of first day of Miri International Jazz Festival (MIJF) 2008. The 14-piece band T’Inventielke from Holland (pronounced as Invent-til-kay) who was having an awesome jam session with the very talented 60-piece Chung Hua school brass band by the breezy beachfront of Parkcity Everly hotel was forced to vacate the open space due to the rain.
The rain, however, did not dampen their spirits, at all. They brought their music to the indoor pavilion and later on, to their individual hotel room balconies. Perching on their room verandahs with their musical instruments like trombones, drums (and even a metal washing board!), T’Inventielke performed to an appreciative audience who ventured out to their own balconies, curious to discover the source of such rousing music.
The band comprising of a group of friends jamming together over the years was slated to perform during breaks in-between performances during the festival providing music under the stars. It was the first time that Miri International Jazz Festival had a marching band on-board and the crowds were thrilled and trailed after them wherever they went.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the spontaneous bout of fun and music brought about unexpectedly despite of the very brief rainfall which gave way to amazingly cool weather thereafter.
That is in essence, the spirit of Miri International Jazz Festival and a prelude of better things to come in the performances later tonight.
