The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme evolved from the Silver Hair Programme, which the government introduced in 1996 to convince foreign retirees above 50 years of age into making Malaysia their second home.

The one-stop centre for the programme is located on the 23rd Floor of Menara Datuk Onn in Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Tourism is the second highest foreign exchange earner for the country and it is a solid reason for the country to be promoting MM2H aggressively. Foreigners who reside here will boost the economy in more ways than one, given their needs. One can also expect regular visits from family members and/or friends that will again help stimulate the economy.

The programme's participants aged below 50 are required to open a fix deposit of RM300,000 while those aged 50 and above have the option of opening a fix deposit of RM150,000 OR show proof of monthly off-shore income of RM10,000.00 such as pension scheme. After a year, participants can make withdrawals but must maintain a minimum balance of RM60,000 in the account. The withdrawals can only go towards house purchase, education for children in Malaysia and medical expenses.

The government is targeting countries like Japan, United Kingdom, South Korea, Bangladesh, and China, among others.
