MULU CAVES / BARIO HIGHLANDS / BA KELALAN VALLEY / MOUNT KINABALU
Day 1 Arrive Miri
Meet upon arrival in Miri and transfer to Mega Hotel or similar. Overnight.
Day 2 Depart Miri / Arrive Mulu/ Deer Cave/Lang Cave/ Bats Watching
Transfer to airport for your flight to Mulu. Meet upon arrival and transfer to the National Park Chalet. From park HQ start up with hike through Mulu amazing tropical rainforest to visit Lang Cave which has a beautiful formation and Deer Cave for its well known as the world’s largest cave entrance. After a visit at the cave, take your time to relax at the open air observatory for an opportunity to witness the phenomenon exodus of millions of bats out of the caves. Return to the hotel. (L, D)
Day 3 Boat Ride/ Penan Settlement / Wind Cave/Clearwater Cave / Return to Miri
After breakfast, you will be taken by boat through the winding rivers to a tribal “Penan” settlement. Continue up to the enchanting Wind and Clearwater caves of Mulu. The wind cave is famous for the naturally “sculpted” column and pillars of the King’s Chamber while the Clearwater Caves was formed by the waters of the 118km which makes it the longest caving system. At the Clearwater spring, you may take your leisure time swimming and have picnic lunch. Transfer to your hotel for check out and straight to the airport for your flight back to Miri. (B L D)
Day 4 Depart Miri / Arrive Bario
We will depart by flight from Miri to Bario Highlands in the morning. On Arrival, transfer to the lodge for one night’s accommodation. After local set lunch at the lodge, we will visit the Ulung Palang and Bario Asal longhouses inhibited by the Kelabit tribe in the Bario Valley. Briefing by your guide of your trek will be held at the lodge prior to dinner. Overnight at the lodge. (L, D)
Day 5 – Pa Ukat / Pa Lungan
Breakfast at the lodge before we start the trek to Pa’Ukat longhouse, then to Pa’Lungan. Trek time will be 4 hours over one small hill (Ra’an Barit) and we will arrive about mid-afternoon. Settle in while your guide will prepare you lunch. Dinner and overnight at the headman’s home. (B, L, D)
Day 6 – Ritoh Monument / Long Repun
We wake up early today, have breakfast and visit the Ritoh Monument before we start on our trek to Long Repun. Trek time will be 5-6 hours involving a fairly strenuous climb over Singkulup Hill with a few river crossings. We will arrive at Long Repun jungle shelter late evening. The shelter is the mid-point journey for us to cross over to Indonesia next day and the site used to be inhabited by the Kelabits (now moved to Pa’Ukat and Pa’Lungan) over 50 years ago during the Japanese occupation of Sarawak. Overnight at the jungle shelter. (B, L, D)
Day 7 – Cross Border / Ba Kelalan / Apple Lodge
We have an early trek today to cross over the Indonesian territory. Trek time is around 5 hours and will cross over one hill (Ra’an Bulu) which marks the Malaysian/Indonesian boundary, with a stop at the bamboo plantation for lunch. We are now in Indonesia and we will arrive at a local village called Pa’Rupai where the tribe here is called Lun Dayeh. We continue another 2-3 hours trek (3 km) across the rice fields to arrive at Ba Kelalan. We will be arriving late in the afternoon and proceed straight to the Apple Lodge for dinner and overnight. Day 8 – View point/Salt Spring/Local Kitchen
Visit the viewpoint, salt spring and local kitchen to experience more of Lun Bawang tribes hospitality. Overnight (B/L/D)
Day 9 Depart Ba Kelalan / Lawas / Kota Kinabalu Overland
Depart to Lawas via flight or 4x4 (depending on the day you depart) and transfer to KK by coach or van. Check in at Shangrila Rasaria or similar. (B/L/D)
Day 10 Timpohon Gate / Mt Hut / Laban Rata or similar
Transfer to Kinabalu Park and Timpohon Gate and start climbing to the Mt Hut. Overnight at Laban Rata or similar. (B/L/D)
Day 11 Summit / KK Town
Early climb to the highest summit in South East Asia to watch the sunrise. Descend to the park and straight to Kota Kinabalu town. Overnight (B/L/D)
Day 12 Depart KK
Transfer to the airport for your flight back. (B)
